If every household in the world ‘ditched’ the television, what effect would it have on greenhouse emissions?

I got rid of my TV around 3 years ago and haven’t looked back. There is no question that it is unnecessary and a waste of time. Moreover, with the increasing uptake of plasma TV which use around four times the amount of electricity that analogue sets do, television must be having a significant impact on global carbon emissions.

Obviously it is not a very realistic scenario, but all the same, I would be very interested if anyone could quantify the impact a global withdrawal from this pervasive drug would have on greenhouse emissions.
